LOS ANGELES – A hot-start in doubles wasn’t enough to sustain No. 36 Stanford as it fell 4-1 to No. 5 UCLA Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Cardinal (10-7, 2-1 Pac-12) captured the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, with the decider coming from Yale Goldberg and Sameer Kumar, who pushed their winning streak to three with a 6-3 win over Gage Brymer and Maxime Cressy.
The Bruins (15-2, 3-0 Pac-12) came roaring back in singles action with straight-set wins at Nos. 5 & 4 to take the 2-1 lead. David Wilczynski stepped up to give 49th-ranked Martin Redlicki an intense match as he pushed the Bruin to the limit, but ultimately fell 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
Maciek Romanowicz sent his first set into a tiebreak as well, but UCLA’s Joseph Di Giulio was able to clinch the match with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win at No 6.
Stanford continues its Pac-12 slate as it faces No. 9 USC Saturday afternoon. Match time is set for noon at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles.
