Stanford Undone by Slow Start

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah jumped out to a big lead early and Stanford was unable to keep pace, dropping the series finale, 9-0, in five innings Sunday.

The Utes (30-13, 11-4 Pac-12) took a 9-0 lead in the first inning and rode the advantage for the remainder of the game.

The Cardinal (13-26, 0-15 Pac-12) settled in nicely after the first inning, keeping Utah off the board in the Utes' final three offensive innings. Carolyn Lee (6-17) got the start and was relieved in the first inning by Haley Snyder.

Snyder battled through the first inning and helped Stanford end the frame. She finished the game retiring seven consecutive batters.

Kayla Bonstrom delivered Stanford's first hit of the game with two outs in the top of the third inning.

Savannah Schulze provided the Cardinal's second hit with two outs in the top of the fifth. Bonstrom was hit in the following at-bat, putting runners on first and second. However, Stanford was unable to find the hit needed to cut into Utah's lead and extend the game.

The Cardinal returns home next weekend, playing host to a three-game series against California beginning Friday at 7 p.m. All three games will be televised on Pac-12 Bay Area.
