Its been a wild season in the Pac-12 -- nine teams are within three games of first-place Utah and Washington. Opportunity awaits the Cardinal, which has won three straight games, in Salt Lake City this week with three games against the Utes, Friday-Sunday.

• Stanford swept Utah in Salt Lake City to end the 2014 regular season and help clinch a bid
to the NCAA tournament.
• Utah took two of three from Stanford at Sunken Diamond in 2013, the Utes’ only series win against the Cardinal in their history.
• Stanford won the first five games in the series.
• Stanford won the first ever meeting between the teams, 7-0, on March 24, 1965 at the Marine Tournament in San Diego, California. The 1965 season was the year before Mark Marquess’ freshman season at Stanford.

We're No. 1

• Stanford entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation in fielding percentage (.986).
• The Cardinal has the fewest errors in the country (295 teams) with just 22 in the first 43 games. No. 1 Florida is second with 27 errors in 49 games.
• The team record for fewest errors in a season is 49 set in 2009 (current pace of just 27 errors) and the NCAA record for fielding percentage is .985 by San Francisco in 2011.
• In addition to those two categories, Stanford pitching also entered the week atop the Pac-12 in ERA (3.03), opposing batting average (.232), and fewest runs (153), earned runs (129), hits (323), and home runs (15) allowed. Also the second-fewest walks (136).
• Most of those numbers aren’t even close:
    - Stanford’s ERA is a full run better than five Pac-12 teams.
    - Stanford has allowed more than 100 fewer runs than Washington State and UCLA.
    - Stanford has allowed 100 fewer hits than two Pac-12 teams.

• Stanford is No. 15 in the nation in ERA (3.03) and has allowed the eighth-fewest earned runs (120) in the country.
• Stanford is also No. 13 in the NCAA in hits per nine innings (7.58) and No. 17 in WHIP (1.20).
• Stanford has held its opponent to two or fewer runs 18 times this year (17-1), and allowed more then two runs 29 times (7-18).
• The Cardinal is 14-3 this year when scoring first and 14-3 when hitting a home run.
• Sophomore Quinn Brodey is No. 7 in the nation with seven sacrifice flies this season.

Stanford Streaks

• Junior Alex Dunlap has reached base in 18 straight games—the longest streak for a Cardinal since Alex Blandino did so in 31 consecutive games in 2014.
• Junior shortstop Tommy Edman has played in 132 straight games (started 129 in a row).
• Edman has an eight-game hitting streak, Dunlap and Brodey have hit in seven in a row.
• Stanford has had four winning streaks of at least three games this season.
• Stanford won its first three Pac-12 series for the first time since 2008 when the Cardinal finished third at the College World Series (won first five that year).

Closing the Door

• Stanford’s bullpen has an ERA of 2.63 and opponents are hitting just .214.
• The reserves also have 159 strikeouts (compared to 77 walks and 125 hits) in 164.0 inn.
• Seven different pitchers have an ERA under 2.00 coming out of the bullpen this year.
• Stanford is 21-2 when leading after seven innings this season.

Academic Honors

• Junior Tommy Edman and sophomore Andrew Summerville were each recognized as Academic All-District honorees by CoSIDA on May 5.
• A computer science major, Edman has started 125 straight games for the Cardinal and maintains a 3.84 GPA at Stanford.
• Summerville holds a 3.72 GPA in Stanford’s Management, Science and Engineering program. He has been especially strong out of the bullpen with a 0.89 ERA. In six relief appearances he has allowed just two earned runs in 20.1 innings with 17 strikeouts.

Pac-12 Pitchers of the Week

• Stanford won the first two Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week awards this season.
• Colton Hock earned the award on March 1 after throwing 5.2 scoreless innings in relief in the longest recorded shut out in the program’s history (since 1959)—Stanford won at #23 Texas, 1-0 in 12 innings, on Feb. 25. Hock finished with a career-high eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits.
• Tristan Beck earned the conference honor in the first week—he was the first Stanford hurler to win the award since 2013 MLB first overall pick Mark Appel in May of 2013.

2016 Schedule

• 54 regular season games, 30 at Klein Field.
• More than half of the schedule (30/55, 54.5%) is against 2015 tournament teams.
• Cal (5), Texas (4), Cal St. Fullerton (3), UCLA (3), USC (3), Oregon (3), Oregon State (3), Arizona State (3), Vanderbilt (3).
• Though the preseason Top 25 rankings varied, each included at least 20+ games for Stanford against Top 25 opponents.
• 11-day break from March 7-17 for finals.
• Longest homestand was seven games and 20 days long (March 1-20).
• Longest road swing is four games (four times).
• First 11 games were played in 13 days.
• Eighteen Stanford baseball games will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks in 2016.

Weekend Recap

• An early deficit proved too much to overcome for Stanford in a 4-1 loss to Pac-12 rival Cal on Thursday night at Sunken Diamond. Cal scored two in the first and one in the second for a 3-0 edge. Stanford scored in the third but was unable to get another run across.
• Freshman Tristan Beck was sensational and received plenty of offensive support as Stanford toppled Cal, 5-1, on Friday night. Beck, who struck out eight of the first nine batters and did not allow a base runner until the fourth, allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings. He finished with nine strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Meanwhile, the Stanford offense tallied three runs in the first, and added a pair in the fourth on a two-run home run by junior Jack Klein.
• A second straight stellar Saturday start from junior Chris Castellanos led Stanford to a 6-4 series-clinching victory over Cal. The Cardinal took a commanding lead in the fourth. Stanford sent 10-men to the plate and scored four runs for a 5-1 lead they did not relinquish.
• Stanford scored in each of the first three innings for a 7-1 lead and tallied a season-high 15 hits to earn a 10-3 mid-week win over Santa Clara on Tuesday at Sunken Diamond.

Up Next

• Stanford hosts technically hosts two games on Tuesday with UC Davis. The teams will wrap up the ninth inning of a suspended game from March 21 (Cardinal leads, 12-9) before the regularly scheduled game begins.
