STANFORD, Calif. – Four Stanford student-athletes have been named to the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Men’s and Women’s At-Large Academic All-District teams, the organization announced today. The awards recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Representing the Cardinal are seniors Bret Bonanni (water polo), Krista Hardebeck (women’s tennis), Conrad Kaminski (men’s volleyball) and Dennis Zaremski (men’s gymnastics). On the men’s side, Stanford tied with USC for the most selections to the District VIII Team.
Bonanni, boasting a 3.578 cumulative grade-point average as a science technology and society major, was also an Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) First Team All-American and ACWPC Academic All-American. He established a new Stanford and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) career scoring record with 360 career goals. The Peter J. Cutino Award finalist led Stanford and the MPSF in scoring, totaling 94 goals and becoming the only Cardinal in history to post multiple 90-goal seasons. Bonanni, who also garnered First Team All-MPSF honors as well as MPSF All-Academic laurels, scored in 29 of Stanford’s 30 games with multiple goals in 25 contests his senior season.
A two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection, Hardebeck is playing arguably the best tennis of her career and has been a dependable senior leader in 2016. A double major in political science and psychology with a 3.80 cumulative GPA, she was tabbed an All-Pac-12 honorable mention pick. She ranks second on the team in overall victories (23-6) and leads the Cardinal in dual wins (17-1). Included in that stretch was a career-high 17-match winning streak that spanned nearly three months. Hardebeck, who is unbeaten in nine Pac-12 duals and 12-1 overall against conference opponents, has played the majority of her matches at the No. 3 spot, but is 6-0 at her current No. 4 position. In doubles, she has paired with freshman Caroline Lampl to finish 17-8 overall and 10-3 in duals as Stanford’s No. 3 duo.
Kaminski is a mechanical engineering major at Stanford with a 3.58 cumulative GPA. A three-time AVCA All-American, he was a first team pick in 2016 as well as a first team All-MPSF selection. The New Berlin, Wisconsin native is also a three-time MPSF All-Academic honoree. He led the nation in blocks per set (1.45) and ranked second in hitting percentage (.478) this season. Kaminski was named the inaugural winner of the Ryan Millar Award, presented to the nation’s top middle attacker by Off the Block. His 135 total blocks this season set a school record for the Rally Scoring Era (2001-present). He ends his career as the program’s leader in the Rally Scoring Era in career hitting percentage (.462) and blocks per set (1.11).
A native of New York, New York, Zaremski boasts a 3.92 cumulative GPA in comparative literature. The 2016 NCAA and MPSF champion on still rings, he is a four-time All-American (twice on still rings, twice on parallel bars) and three-time MPSF All-Academic team member. A two-time team captain, Zaremski helped guide the Cardinal to runner-up finishes at the MPSF and NCAA championships in 2016. After graduation, Zaremski will begin his career in finance this summer as a research associate at Fred Alger Management, an investment management firm in New York City.
All honorees will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore academic standings at his/her current institution.
