Captains Revealed

STANFORD, Calif. - Head coach Jason Borrelli has announced that redshirt junior Nathan Butler, redshirt senior Josh Marchok, sophomore Joey McKenna and redshirt senior Jim Wilson will serve as team captains for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

Wilson will be serving as a captain for the third straight year, while Butler also helped lead the squad in 2015-16. Captains were chosen by a team vote.

Butler is a two-time NCAA qualifier and the 2015 Pac-12 champion at 285 pounds. The computer science major finished 25-7 overall and 10-3 in duals in 2015-16. A native of Leavenworth, Kansas, he tied for the team-lead with eight falls last season. He is a two-time NWCA Academic All-American and a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic first team pick.

Marchok was 9-2 in 2015-16 before having his season cut short due to injury. A management science and engineering major, he is 44-20 in his career at 285 pounds. He placed fifth at the Hokie Open last year and is a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection for the Cardinal.

McKenna, Stanford’s starter at 141 pounds in 2015-16, produced one of the best rookie campaigns in program history. The Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year became the first Stanford wrestler to garner All-America honors as a freshman, and the first to place third at the NCAA Tournament. The Towaco, New Jersey native was 27-3 overall, ranking seventh on the school’s freshman wins list. He is just the fifth freshman, and third in the past three years, to win a Pac-12 championship, becoming the first Cardinal to claim the 141-pound title.

Wilson, a psychology major from Lodi, California, he finished one win shy of his second career NCAA All-America honors, falling in the Round of 12 at the national tournament. He was 27-8 on the year and became the first Cardinal wrestler to win three individual Pac-12 Conference titles. He holds a 96-23 overall record in three seasons at Stanford, sitting just outside the top-10 in career wins.
