Viall Meets the Mets

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior pitcher Chris Viall was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft with the 190th overall pick by the New York Mets on Friday.

Viall finished with a career high in strikeouts (29) and a career low in walks (19) in 2016. He did not allow a run in any of his first nine appearances (11.0 innings), and did not allow a home run all season. In 16 appearances, including two starts, the Soquel, Calif., native finished his junior campaign with a 1-1 record, one save and 5.01 ERA in 23.1 innings. 

For his career, Viall went 4-7 with 47 appearances for the Cardinal, including 15 starts. In 99.1 innings, he allowed just 96 hits, struck out 68 batters, and finished with an ERA of 4.80. 

Viall was the second Cardinal selected in the 2016 draft as Cal Quantrill went eighth overall to the San Diego Padres on Thursday. Junior teammate Tommy Edman went six picks after Viall to the St. Louis Cardinals with the 196th selection.
