Season in Review

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford (16-11, 4-3 Pac-12) wrapped up its best season since 2012, showcasing its continued progress in becoming an elite powerhouse again under second-year Head Coach Paul Goldstein. With a schedule riddled with top-25 teams, the Cardinal finished its season with an NCAA Round of 16 appearance – its first since 2012 – and a No. 21 ranking.

Making its 37th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, the Cardinal upended red-hot Notre Dame with a solid 4-1 win to advance to the Round of 32. Looming in the next round was 14th-seeded Northwestern, whom the Cardinal would face on the Wildcats' home court. Tom Fawcett's thrilling 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 win at the top spot to clinch the 4-3 upset highlighted the day that saw the Cardinal finally win one of its five 4-3 matches on the year.

Despite dominating the doubles point in all three meetings with UCLA, the Cardinal saw its team season ultimately close with a tough 4-2 loss to the Bruins. All 11 losses for the Cardinal on the year came at the hands of top-25 ranked teams.

Sophomore Tom Fawcett was awarded an ITA All-America accolade after a season which saw the Cardinal post a 22-8 overall record and 16-6 dual record with 15 wins over ranked opponents. On the year Fawcett ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation while finishing the season ranked 10th. Fawcett also held a team-leading five match-clinching points on the year, including one over No. 14 Northwestern to advance the Cardinal to the NCAA Round of 16.

Fawcett also received a berth in the NCAA Singles Championship where he collected the first win of his career in the tournament with a victory over 22nd-ranked Nicolas Alvarez of Duke in straight sets before falling in three sets to No. 39 Gustav Hanson. Fawcett also paired up with Maciek Romanowicz in the NCAA Doubles Championship, where the duo was paired up with the No. 1 team of Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson of Florida, whom they fell to 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (7).

The Cardinal also saw three collect All-Pac-12 Team awards on the year with Tom Fawcett taking home first team honors, David Wilczynski second team honors and Maciek Romanowicz receiving an honorable mention.

Four members of the Stanford squad also took home Pac-12 All-Academic Team honors. Yale Goldberg and Maciek Romanowicz both took home first team honors as Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski added second team honors to their resumes.
