EUGENE, Ore. – Sean McGorty placed 15th in the men's 5,000-meter final at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Saturday, concluding competition for the seven Stanford athletes at the meet – all of whom return next season.
The 5,000 was unique in the wild twists and turns that took place at Hayward Field. A slow early pace was broken by a two-man breakaway, which was caught. Then Galen Rupp fired into the lead, only to be caught himself. The surprise winner? Bernard Lagat, age 41.
McGorty, the NCAA outdoor runner-up in his first U.S. senior championship final, began to lose contact with the chase pack midway through the race. He finished in 14:03.99, with Stanford alum and former Cardinal assistant coach Garrett Heath in 13th in 13:55.58.
Two alumnae compete in finals Sunday, on the final day of the Olympic Trials: Kori Carter in the 400 hurdles and Sara Hall in the 5,000.
