Brewer to Represent Canada

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford incoming freshman Mikaela Brewer was selected as one of the 12 athletes to Canada's 2016 U18 women's national team, which will represent its country at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women's Championship in Chile, Canada Basketball announced Friday.
 
The competition, which runs from July 13-17 and takes place in the host city of Valdivia, Chile, features the eight national teams from the Americas region divided into two groups of four squads each. Canada will face Group B opponents Mexico, Chile and Puerto Rico in the preliminary round of the tournament before the knockout stage begins on Saturday, July 16.
 
The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals, while the bottom pair play classification games for places 5-8. All teams compete until the last day of the championship. The top four teams qualify for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy next July.
 
Brewer, a skilled perimeter prospect, is a veteran of Canada Basketball and most recently represented her country at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women in the Czech Republic. The 5-foot-9 Brewer helped Team Canada to a sixth-place finish, averaging 20.1 minutes, 8.0 points and 1.6 rebounds per outing.
 
She shot 63 percent from behind the arc (10-of-16) and had her best game in a 46-45 win over Japan on July 5, scoring 17 on 6-of-9 shooting. Brewer was a perfect 5-of-5 deep and her 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining lifted Canada to victory. The Barrie, Ontario native was also selected to the Canadian National Team last summer for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Chekhov, Russia, but was unable to compete due to injury.
 
Brewer (Barrie, Ontario/Innisdale Secondary School) is part of Stanford's vaunted four-member recruiting class, rated ninth by espnW HoopGurlz and seventh by Prospects Nation, which also includes DiJonai Carrington (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Christian Academy), Nadia Fingall (Navarre, Fla./Choctawhatchee) and Anna Wilson (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue).
 
Stanford made its 18th overall trip to the Elite Eight and 10th in the last 13 years in 2015-16, posting a 27-8 overall record and a 14-4 mark in Pac-12 play. The Cardinal won 25 games for the 15th straight year and became the seventh Division I institution to reach the 1,000-victory plateau when it beat Oregon State on February 26.
