WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Stanford men's rowers Jovanni Stefani and Brennan Wertz, coached by Stanford head coach Craig Amerkhanian, have qualified to represent the United States in the men's pair (2-) at the World Rowing Championships.
The World Rowing Championships will take place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Aug. 21-28.
"Brennan and Jovanni represented Stanford in the men's pair, racing exceptionally well to have an opportunity to represent their country," Amerkhanian said. "They will now race for the United States at the World Rowing Championships. We are all very proud of them. They worked very hard to earn this."
Stefani and Wertz, who trained over the last six weeks in Marin, California, Hanover, New Hampshire and Princeton, New Jersey, competed on the Mercer Lake course in New Jersey to earn a spot at the World Rowing Championships. The Cardinal duo raced three times competing against some of the strongest teams in the nation, winning the event on Thursday.
Stefani and Wertz raced down the Mercer Lake course in 6:37.92 to defeat the New York Athletic Crew by a length in the under 23 men's pair. The duo also raced in the United States eight at the 2014 World Rowing Junior Championships.
