STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford showcased the depth of its lineup Thursday night to earn a convincing 3-0 exhibition game victory against UC Davis.
The Cardinal utilized 22 players, including three goalkeepers, to pick up the win. All eight of Stanford's freshmen logged minutes during the game.
Veterans Megan Turner, Ryan Walker-Hartshorn and Andi Sullivan provided the scoring with a goal apiece. Freshman Sam Tran registered the only assist of the game, contributing on Turner's goal.
Stanford controlled a majority of the possession throughout the game and spent most of its time in the attacking zone. Its defense, anchored by Maddie Bauer and Alana Cook, held firm throughout the night and limited the Aggies' to two shots.
Jane Campbell got the start in goal and made one save. She was replaced at the 30-minute mark by Alison Jahansouz. Freshman Lauren Rood came on at the 60th minute to close the game and secure the shutout for the Cardinal.
Stanford got on the board early in the fourth minute when Sullivan sent a long ball from her defensive half to the right corner of the field. Tran ran onto the ball in the corner and sent a cross to the back post where Turner was waiting to finish the play with a full volley into the back of the goal.
The Cardinal added another in the 32nd minute when Walker-Hartshorn capitalized on a loose ball after a cross by Tegan McGrady into the box. With the ball bouncing toward her near the penalty spot, Walker-Hartshorn placed a shot just under the crossbar with the outside of her left foot.
Sullivan provided the exclamation point on the night with an outstanding free kick in the 81st minute. After a foul near the left corner of the 18-yard box, about 21 yards out, Sullivan drilled a right-footed shot over the wall and into the near post to extend Stanford's lead to 3-0.
The Cardinal opens its regular season with a pair of games on the road beginning Aug. 19 at Navy at 4 p.m. (PT). Stanford then heads to Georgetown on Aug. 21 at 9 a.m. before returning for a nine-game homestand.
