STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Maverick McNealy has been selected to represent the United States in the World Amateur Team Championship.
The Portola Valley, California, product will join Oklahoma sophomore Brad Dalke and Texas junior Scottie Scheffler to compete on Sept. 21-24 at Mexico's Mayakoba El Camaleon Golf Club and Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club in the biennial matches.
The United States has captured a record 15 titles since the inception of the event in 1958. The format is 72 holes of medal play, with each country counting its top two scores daily.
McNealy becomes the third Stanford golfer to participate, joining Tiger Woods (1994) and Joel Kribel (1996, 1998). Patrick Rodgers was a first alternate in 2012.
McNealy, the top-ranked amateur in the world, won the Mark H. McCormack Medal last week presented to the world's top male amateur golfer in 2016. A two-time All-America first team and Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year (2015, 2016), McNealy posted a 69.57 scoring average last season, second lowest in the country.
In 2015, he received the Haskins Award as the nation's top collegiate golfer.
A management science and engineering major, McNealy has won 10 individual titles during his Cardinal career, second to Rodgers and Woods with 11. McNealy played on the 2015 United States Walker Cup Team.
