Mendoza, Chun Honored

STANFORD, Calif. – A pair of Stanford men's water polo standouts were honored by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) on Monday. Sophomore driver Mitchell Mendoza was named the MPSF/KAP7 Player of the Week, while freshman goalie Andrew Chun was named the MPSF/KAP7 Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
 
The accolades come after the Cardinal swept its four games in San Diego over the weekend. On Saturday, Stanford opened the season at the Triton Invitational with a 15-5 victory over UC San Diego and a 15-3 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. On Sunday, the Cardinal participated in the UCLA Invitational in San Diego, defeating Chapman (18-1) and Redlands (15-4).
 
Mendoza took home his first career MPSF weekly honor following a 13-goal week in Stanford's four wins. He registered multiple scores in each match. He scored a team-high five goals in the win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The sophomore also posted three scores each in the victory over No. 9 UC San Diego and the win over Redlands. He had two first-quarter goals in the win over Chapman. 
 
Making his collegiate debut on Sunday, Chun started and played the entire match in the cage with nine saves in the win over Chapman. Chun again played the entire match in goal against Redlands, registering eight saves.
 
Stanford will host No. 8 UC Irvine in its home opener next Saturday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m. PT at Avery Aquatics Center.
