Cardinal Falls in Overtime

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Goals from Sarah Helgeson and Fran Tew as well as five saves from Kelsey Bing weren't enough to hold off No. 18 Boston College as the Cardinal fell 3-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium.

"It was a good competitive game," stated head coach Tara Danielson "though we need to continue to develop capitalizing on our opportunities when presented with them."

Stanford (1-3) came out firing in the first half, peppering the Eagle defense with seven shots to force BC's Audra Hampsch to make five saves and keep BC in the hunt.  The Eagles struck first at the end of the half with leading-scorer, Brittany Sheenan putting away a rebound off of a penalty corner to send BC into the break up 1-0.

While BC (2-2) took the first shot in the second half that Kelsey Bing turned away, six minutes later Caroline Beaudoin set up Sarah Helgeson for a tip-in to the far post to knot it 1-1. The second half showcased fireworks by both teams though, as less than two minutes later the Eagles took the lead again with Lucy Lytle going off the post to make it 2-1.

The Cardinal refused to stop as it pushed the Eagles defense to the limit and forced Hampsch to make eight saves in the game before it finally capitalized on a penalty stroke that they put in the hands of captain Fran Tew, who made it 2-2 to send the game into overtime.

The Eagles wasted no time as just over a minute in, Ymke Rose Gote set up a breakaway to Brittany Sheenan, who managed to put away the win and snap a 14 game streak of allowing two goals or less for the Cardinal.

Stanford is back in action Sunday as it sets to take on No. 1 and defending NCAA champion, Syracuse on the Orangemen's home turf at 11 a.m. PT. The game will be live streamed here.
