Triumph in Mountain Pacific Invite Opener

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – No. 5 Stanford men's water polo used a season-high 20 goals to open the Mountain Pacific Invitational with a 20-6 victory over No. 18 San Jose State Friday night at Northgate High School.
 
The Cardinal (6-1) advanced in the three-day tournament to face No. 4 Pacific Saturday at 9:25 a.m. PT at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, California.
 
Stanford used a pair of goals each from sophomores Blake Parrish and Harrison Enright to surge out to a 4-1 lead on San Jose State (2-5) in the first quarter.
 
Holding a 7-2 halftime advantage, the Cardinal continued to extend its lead with a seven-goal third period. Junior Sam Pfeil did most of the damage with three goals in the third quarter alone.
 
He added two more scores in the fourth as Stanford cruised to the 20-6 win.
 
Pfeil led the Cardinal with five goals in the match, while Enright recorded four scores and freshman Bennett Williams posted three goals in the win.
 
Both junior Oliver Lewis and freshman Andrew Chun saw time in the cage for the Cardinal, with Lewis getting the start and finishing with five saves. Chun posted two stops in the fourth quarter against the Spartans.
