STANFORD, Calif. – The Cardinal offense came out aggressive in the second half, with Stanford outshooting the visiting 10th-ranked Wolverines nine-to-six on the day, but Michigan held on to take a 2-1 win Friday afternoon at Varsity Turf.

On the game, head coach Tara Danielson stated, "We played a great second half – we were able to open up the game and create a lot of attack, though we need to start the game playing our style. We started off slow and tentative, when we really need to find our groove earlier."

The Cardinal (0-2) managed to match Michigan (2-1) in shots in the first half with both teams putting five on target overall. The Wolverines struck first in the 24th minute with Leah Cardarelli setting up Emma Way for a goal past a diving Kelsey Bing. Bing stepped up to make three incredible saves in the half to send the Cardinal into the break down 1-0.

Michigan wasted no time in the second half as Sina Lampe sent a ball across the circle that Courtney Enge was able to deflect into the top left corner to put the Wolverines up 2-0. The Cardinal battened down the hatches as it always does, entering the game with an 11 game streak of allowing two or less goals and it didn't disappoint.

Stanford's offense kept firing away in the second half, keeping the pressure on Michigan before the Cardinal finally broke through in the 51st minute as a penalty corner brought the ball wide, where Caroline Beaudoin poked it through the middle to Casey Deeds, who set up Marissa Cicione for a goal to make it 2-1.

The Cardinal was awarded seven penalty corners in the game, though UM's Sam Swenson was on point in goal with four saves to quell the Cardinal attack and close out the 2-1 win.

Stanford returns to its home turf this Sunday as it sets to host the Kent State Golden Flashes at noon on Varsity Turf.
