BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 15 Stanford went into overtime for the fourth straight game to begin the season and walked away with a scoreless draw against No. 5 Indiana to close out the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sunday night.
The Cardinal (0-1-3) returns home for three straight matches beginning next Saturday when its hosts San Jose State at 7 p.m. in a match televised on the Pac-12 Network.
"The character we showed today to bounce back from a gut-wrenching result [on Friday] is truly amazing," Stanford head coach Jeremy Gunn said. "We didn't play our best soccer today, but the commitment was absolutely unbelievable for a group that's gone through four overtime games in nine days."
Stanford's best chances to break the stalemate came midway through the second period. Sam Werner sent a ball to the back post off a Jared Gilbey corner at 64:01. Tomas Hilliard-Arce leapt up and over Hoosier defender Derek Creviston, but had his header tipped away by Colin Webb.
Two minutes later, Amir Bashti let it rip with his left from over 20 yards out, but again Indiana's Colin Webb made a diving save. Stanford's sophomore forward also had a chance early on in the 15th minute when he tried to beat Webb to the back post from the top of the 18, necessitating the first of Webb's four saves.
Stanford keeper Andrew Epstein wasn't seriously tested and made a pair of stops in securing his 15th career shutout. Indiana played a man down for the game's final 67:18 after Grant Lillard received his second yellow late in the first half.
"We have determination," Gunn added. "Obviously when you go a man up you'd hope to capitalize, [but] we were so dog tired. We had nothing in the tank from such a brutal result on Friday. We have to look at how incredibly our boys competed."
The Cardinal's Pennsylvania products, midfielder Drew Skundrich from Lancaster, Pa. and defender Brian Nana-Sinkam from Litiz, Pa., were named to the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic All-Tournament Team.
"Lots of players have made fantastic contributions in the last four games," Gunn said. "It's really exciting as we start to gel together."
