Strong Again

STANFORD, Calif. – For the second consecutive week, the Stanford women's golf team garnered a second-place finish.

After collecting runner-up honors last week in the season-opening Windy City Intercollegiate in Chicago, the Cardinal finished second in the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Professor Condoleezza Rice at Stanford Golf Course. Sunday's final round was cancelled due to rain, reducing the event to 36 holes.

Second-round leader UCLA captured the team title for the third time, finishing at 4-over 572. No. 2-ranked Stanford claimed second at 15-over 583, followed by Cal at 589 in the 17-school event.

Teeing off early Sunday, the Cardinal B team braved the rain and soggy conditions and made a strong move. However, play was called due to standing water on several greens about 10:30 a.m. – three hours into the round – and cancelled 30 minutes later with the leaders yet to complete three holes.

The B team finished 11th.

"They were 1-under and pretty excited," said Anne Walker, the Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women's Golf. "That's really the highlight."

For the third consecutive year, senior Bronte Law of UCLA won medalist honors. She fired rounds of 70-65 on the par-71 layout to finish at 7-under 135. Law becomes the second player in tournament history to win three-straight years, matching Stacey Prammanasudh of Tulsa (1999-01).

Stanford freshman Andrea Lee followed up last week's individual victory by tying for second with scores of 72-68 to finish at 2-under 140. Senior Casey Danielson came in fourth with rounds of 72-69 and checked in at 1-under 141.

"Those kids played really solid," Walker said. "Not a lot of fancy stuff. Just a lot of fairways, greens and waiting for putts to fall. We talk about that often as a group. Patience is what leads you all the way until the end of the season."

Junior Shannon Aubert (74-78) and sophomore Sierra Kersten (76-76) wound up at 10-over 152 and tied for 46th, while senior Jisoo Keel (74-80) finished at 12-over 154 and tied for 63rd.

Competing for the Stanford B team, senior Quirine Eijkenboom tied for 19th (75-72, 147), freshmen Albane Valenzuela (74-77) and Emily Wang (75-76) tied for 37th at 151, freshman Madie Chou (76-76) tied for 46th at 152, and junior Calli Ringsby (78-75, 153) tied for 55th.

Up next for Stanford is the inaugural Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club in Kona, Hawaii, Oct. 24-25.

"All in all, very pleased," said Walker. "I've got my work cut in terms of who's going to travel next week."
