CHICAGO, Ill. – Led by freshman Andrea Lee, Stanford surged into third place on Monday affer 36 holes of the season-opening Windy City Collegiate at Glen View Club.
Playing in her first college event, she fired a 4-under-par 68 in the morning, then followed up with a 71 in the afternoon to finish at 5-under 139. Lee is fourth individually, four strokes behind leader Bailey Tardy of Georgia.
The Cardinal combined for a four-player score of 3-over 291 in the morning, but came back strong after lunch, shooting 6-under 282, tying for the low total of the session. All five players recorded par or better scores, paced by senior Casey Danielson and sophomore Sierra Kersten with 70s. Lee and junior Shannon Aubert contributed 71s.
Georgia is the team leader at 12-under 564, followed by USC (568) and Stanford (573).
Ten of the 14 teams participated in the 2016 NCAA Championships.
Conditions were mostly calm and sunny, and many players took advantage of the rain-soaked course and receptive greens.
Lee made five birdies in the morning. She played her second nine – the front, in 3-under 33, and was a combined 2-under on the par-3s.
Danielson (73) had four birdies and senior Jisoo Keel (74), who did not compete the last two seasons, added three birdies.
In the afternoon, Kersten registered five birdies while Lee had four. Danielson had three birdies against one bogey, and Aubert turned in a clean card with a birdie and 17 pars.
Danielson is tied for 13th at 1-under 143; Keel is tied for 26th at 2-over 146; Aubert is tied for 32nd at 3-over 147; and Kersten is tied for 46th at 5-over 149.
