STANFORD, Calif. – Three players scored in double figures and Stanford used a 20-0 second-quarter run to beat UC San Diego in an exhibition in Maples Pavilion on Friday night, 85-41.
Junior Brittany McPhee led the way with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and nine rebounds in 21 minutes while senior Erica McCall chipped in 16 and sophomore Shannon Coffee added 14.
McPhee did the heavy lifting early, scoring 15 of her 19 in 17 first-half minutes. McCall and Coffee each scored 11 in the second half.
Stanford was up seven, 22-15, before Marta Sniezek hit two free throws to close the first quarter and ignited a sustained 20-0 run over the next 18:31. The Cardinal missed its first shot of the second quarter and turned it over on the next possession, but Briana Roberson picked Mikayla Williams and fed ahead to Sniezek for the layup with 8:27 on the clock and Stanford was off to the races.
Erica McCall grabbed an offensive rebound, put it back in, was fouled and sank her free throw. McPhee then set up freshman Mikaela Brewer for her first of two 3-pointers, Coffee and McPhee split pairs at the line, sophomore Alanna Smith nailed a triple, Coffee made a layup and McPhee hit another from behind the arc to cap the run with 91 seconds until halftime.
The Tritons lone points of the period came on a 3-pointer from Joleen Yang with just over a minute to play. McPhee would make a layup with 21 second left in the half to give Stanford a 44-18 edge at the break.
The Cardinal was 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the floor on the night, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) on 3-pointers and 77.3 percent (17-of-22) on free throws. Stanford outscored the Tritons 40-8 in the paint and pulled down 59 rebounds to UCSD's 25. Twenty-five offensive rebounds led to 29 second-chance points.
Stanford, which set a school record in rejections a year ago, had seven players combine for nine blocks on Friday.
The Cardinal begins its regular season next Friday night, Nov. 11, when it hosts Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
