Top Seed Secured

ATLANTA, Ga. – Three players broke par to help the No. 3-ranked  Stanford women's golf team capture the stroke play portion of the second annual East Lake Cup on Monday at historic East Lake Golf Club.

Freshman Andrea Lee and senior Casey Danielson fired 4-under 68s and junior Shannon Aubert added a 71. Lee and Danielson tied for first in the individual competition in the prestigious four-team event, with Lee securing the medalist trophy by sinking a 25-foot birdie putt on the sixth hole of a sudden death playoff.

The trio helped the Cardinal post a best four out five player score of 6-under 282 to earn the No. 1 seed on Tuesday when the format switches to match play. In a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship final, Stanford will face No. 4 seed Washington (+28, 316), while No. 2 seed UCLA (-1, 287) opposes No. 3 Duke (+2, 290) in the other semifinal match.

The finals and consolation finals will be played Wednesday. Golf Channel will provide live coverage from noon-3 p.m. PT both days.

"Really pleased with Andrea and Casey's play," said Anne Walker, the Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women's Golf. "Outstanding golf on a difficult golf course. I like where our team finished and was excited to see Shannon shoot under par again."

Lee and Danielson combined for 14 birdies, while Aubert made three.  Sophomore Sierra Kersten shot 75 and freshman Albane Valenzuela finished with 76, recording three birdies.

It marked the second victory in four college starts for Lee. The last frosh to accomplish the feat for Stanford was four-time All-American Mariah Stackhouse in 2013-14.

"It was definitely hard going against your teammate," said Lee of the playoff. "But we were having fun and supporting each other."

Added Danielson, "Andrea and I are both competitors. If anything, it helps make us better."
Lee, whose prior win came at the season-opening Windy City Intercollegiate in Chicago, birdied the last two holes Monday.
