STANFORD, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Cardinal field hockey team travels east this week to make its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 15th overall when it takes on No. 4 North Carolina Saturday in the College Park Regional at the University of Maryland. Game time is set for 11 a.m. at the Terrapin Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Last Week with Stanford Field Hockey
• The Cardinal clinched its first America East Conference title and first since 2012 last weekend with a 3-2 win over UMass Lowell in quarterfinals, 2-0 over Cal in semifinals before winning the all-west final 1-0 over Pacific.
Postseasons of Years Past
• Under head coach Tara Danielson, the Cardinal have gone to the NCAA Tournament six out of her seven seasons at the helm. In 2014, the Cardinal claimed its first win in NCAA Tournament history with a 2-1 overtime win over Louisville in Storrs, Conn.
Not so (Recent) Familiar Foe...
• All-time against the Tar Heels the Cardinal is 1-9 and has seen UNC twice in the last seven years - once in the NCAA tournament. While North Carolina won both... they've never seen the class of 2016...
NCAAtionally Famous
• The Cardinal defense has been nearly impenetrable this season as it holds the top spot in the NCAA in Goals Against Average (1.09).
Other notable stats for Stanford include:
• 3rd in Save Percentage (.771)
• 3rd in Shutouts Per Game (0.37)
Kelsey Bing:
• 1st in the NCAA in Goals Against (1.08)
• 3rd in Save Percentage (.764)
Terrible Tew(s)
• Fran Tew has exploded out of the gates to lead the Cardinal this season. You'll always hear her with her amazing accent in the backfield, but she's also vicious on attack. Give her less than a second and she'll throw it down - which she did scoring two goals against UC Davis on October 21 and another against Cal on October 23 to be named America East Offensive Player of the Week on October 25.
In addition, Tew was named the Most Outstanding Player in the America East Tournament for her work in leading Stanford to its first America East title and first conference title since 2012.
Oh - also she leads the Cardinal in scoring - while leading the best defense in the country.
Game of Numbers
• 81 - Consecutive games (over 5 years) that the Cardinal have allowed three or less goals (last was No. 1 UNC 11/10/12)
• 4 - Freshmen that have played in every game
• 50-11 - Career record in home matches for Danielson
• 75 - Winning percentage Danielson has in her tenure at Stanford
Rise As ONE
• The motto for the 2016 season is "Rise as One" - a slogan that has two meanings. First, to rise as a team together on and off the turf as well as rising in the rankings with their work on the turf.
Coaching Milestones
• Tara Danielson's tenure on the Farm has showcased success nearly unparalleled in Stanford Field Hockey. In just six seasons she has become the second winningest coach in program history - second behind only Sheryl Johnson, who led the program for 18 years to 165 wins. It took Johnson 13 years to get her 100th win at Stanford... Danielson collected hers in less than SEVEN years. This year Danielson led the Cardinal to her 100th win at Stanford - against the Yale Bulldogs on September 25th.
A Look Back to 2015
• No. 13 Stanford advanced to the semifinals of its first America East Tournament topping Vermont 5-2 before falling 2-1 (OT) to No. 17 Maine. In addition the Cardinal advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in program history. The Cardinal was defeated by No. 6 Duke 1-0 in OT.
