STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's volleyball team (21-7) will begin its quest for the program's seventh NCAA title at home this week, as the squad earned the No. 6 overall seed in the 2016 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship and was selected to host the first and second rounds.
Stanford will play its first round match at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 at Maples Pavilion against Denver (23-8). The Pioneers won their third-straight Summit League regular season and tournament titles to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Western Kentucky (30-2) and Boise State (25-6) will meet in the other first-round matchup at Maples Pavilion on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Toppers, who have won 21 in a row going into the postseason, won the Conference USA regular season and tournament championships to receive an automatic berth into the tournament. The Broncos, who are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance, won the Mountain West title and are currently on a 14-match winning streak. The winners of the Stanford-Denver match and the Western Kentucky-Boise State match will meet in the second round on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
Should Stanford advance, the team will likely travel to Madison, Wisconsin for the next two rounds, Dec. 9-10. Should the Cardinal advance and No. 3 seed Wisconsin falter in the first or second round, Stanford would host a regional. The 2016 Final Four will be held at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio on Dec. 15-17.
Stanford is making its 36th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and is one of just two teams to have made it to all 36 tournaments. The Cardinal will be seeking its seventh NCAA title, 20th Final Four trip and 15th appearance in the national title match.
Under 16th-year head coach John Dunning, Stanford has reached six of the last 15 NCAA title matches and won two national championships.
The Cardinal wrapped up the regular season on Friday with a dominating sweep over Bay Area rival California. Stanford finished tied for second in the Pac-12 with UCLA with a 15-5 conference mark. Eight Pac-12 schools earned bids to the NCAA Tournament, tied with the Big Ten for the most in the nation.
