STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford senior forward Erica McCall is among 30 women's basketball players on the John R. Wooden Award Women's Preseason Top 30. The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation's top five players, will be announced the week of the Final Four.
It's the third watch list for the Cardinal senior. In the past two weeks McCall has also landed on lists for the 2017 Naismith Women's College Player of the Year and the 2017 Wade Trophy.
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird ('79), Michael Jordan ('84), Tim Duncan ('97), Candace Parker ('07 and '08), Kevin Durant ('09) and Maya Moore of Connecticut ('09 and '11). Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike won the 2014 Wooden Award.
McCall paces Stanford in scoring (17.2), rebounding (8.6) and blocks (1.9) through the season's first nine games and is 16 points away from becoming the 37th player in school history to reach score 1,000.
Her 24 career double-doubles are tied for 13th among active NCAA players and she's had 22 in her last 43 games. Among those active players, only Lexi Martins of George Washington (25), Alaina Coates of South Carolina (24) and Nia Coffey (23) of Northwestern have had more since the start of the 2015-16 season.
McCall's 66 blocks last season tied for third in Stanford single-season history and her 154 career blocks rank fifth at Stanford behind Jayne Appel (278), Chiney Ogwumike (202), Val Whiting (201) and Kristen Newlin (163).
An All-Pac-12 pick and Pac-12 All-Defensive Team selection as a junior, McCall checked in at No. 23 in espnW's preseason list of the best women's college basketball players in 2016-17 and was also named to the five-person preseason All-Pac-12 team.
Stanford is in the middle of its customary finals break and returns to the court at Tennessee on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. ET/noon PT in a game televised on the SEC Network.
