LA JOLLA, Calif. – Four Cardinal put in two goals apiece and No. 3 Stanford returned from an extended finals break to beat No. 10 UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon, 11-5.
Shannon Cleary, Katie Dudley, Dani Jackovich and Jordan Raney led the charge with their two-goal games, while Madison Berggren, Jamie Neushul and Gurpreet Sohi each added scores of their own. Julia Hermann faced 28 total shots, 16 on frame and made 11 saves, her fifth game in double figures this season.
UCSD struck first with a pair of early goals from Julia Kirkland (7:22) and Alexis Wieseler (6:08), but Stanford reeled off four straight to take a 4-2 lead late in the second quarter.
Madison Berggren set up Shannon Cleary at 4:46 in the first and Katie Dudley converted in a 6-in-5 off a feed from Jamie Neushul. Jordan Raney scored Stanford’s first two goals in the second with both assists courtesy of Neushul. After a Laurel Kistler power-play goal (1:05), Berggren found Dani Jackovich with 36 seconds remaining until the break for the Cardinal’s fifth goal of the half.
Gurpreet Sohi fired home a penalty at 4:53 in the third and Kayla Fedler scored on the power play for UCSD with 56 ticks left in the frame to pull the Tritons within two, 6-4, but Stanford scored the next five to win going away.
Rachel Johnson fed Dudley with one second on the clock to close out the third. In the fourth, Jackovich (7:33), Berggren (5:12), Neushul (3:03) and Cleary (2:35) powered Stanford to an 11-4 advantage before UCSD’s Julia Kirkland found the back of the cage with 32 seconds left in the game.
Stanford went 5-of-6 on the power play.
The Cardinal returns on action at noon on Tuesday when it plays at No. 13 UC Santa Barbara before returning home for its 2016 Pac-12 Networks debut on Saturday, March 26 against Arizona State (11 a.m.).
