RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The 11th ranked Stanford women’s golf team returned to competition Monday after completing winter finals by posting a first-round win in the SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms Golf Club.
The fourth-seed Cardinal defeated 13th-seeded Texas State, 3-2, in the 16-team match play event. The afternoon match against fifth-seeded Arizona State was suspended by darkness, with Stanford leading in three matches and trailing in two in the championship bracket.
The matches will resume Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. PT, with third-round play to follow. The tournament, hosted by San Diego State, concludes Wednesday.
Junior Casey Danielson gave the Cardinal a strong start against Texas State, carding three birdies and never trailed in a 3 and 1 win against Maty Monzingo. Senior Lauren Kim followed with a 4 and 3 victory against Camile Boeffard, also recording three birdies. Kim pulled away by winning the 10th, 11th and 12th holes.
Senior Mariah Stackhouse closed out Stanford’s triumph by beating Anne-Charlotte Mora, 3 and 2. Stackhouse rallied from an early 1-down deficit to win four-consecutive holes and never looked back.
In the afternoon session, Danielson is 2-up through 16 holes, Kim is 1-up after 13, and sophomore Shannon Aubert is 5-up through 12. Stackhouse is 1-down after 12 and junior Quirine Eijkenboom is 4-down through 14.
