Eight Straight for Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – Nine different Cardinal scored for the seventh time this season and No. 3 Stanford extended its win streak to a season-high eight games with a 14-5 victory over No. 18 San Diego State on Sunday afternoon.

Jamie Neushul and Gurpreet Sohi led the way with hat tricks while freshman Kat Klass scored twice for her ninth multi-goal effort of the season. Julia Hermann made 11 saves, reaching double digits in stops for the seventh time.

Stanford (19-2, 4-0 MPSF), which jumped out to a 4-0 lead in yesterday’s win against No. 7 Cal, raced out to a 3-0 edge on Sunday. Neushul netted her first two at 7:37 and 3:49 in the first off assists from Madison Berggren and Katie Dudley fought at two-meters to score her 22nd of the year with 1:18 remaining in the period.

Kat Klass fired home both of Stanford’s goals in the second quarter. The freshman scored first on the counter when she found space in the middle of the pool (6:08) and then skipped in a 6-on-5 goal nearly three minutes later (3:21) to put the Cardinal on top at halftime, 5-2.

Stanford scored the first three coming out of the break to extend its lead to six, 8-2. Sohi tallied her first of three in the second half when Berggren set her up 1:30 into the third quarter. Anna Yelizarova used a hesitation shot to fool the keeper for a power-play score at 3:40. Minutes later, Jamie Neushul froze her defender and dropped a no-look pass to Sohi who beat SDSU’s Rachel Mitchell far post.

Shannon Cleary answered an Aztec goal with one of her own to put Stanford up 9-3 heading into the fourth. The sophomore hounded San Diego State mid-tank, stole the ball, took it herself up the pool and calmly slipped it past Mitchell with 36 seconds on the clock.

SDSU scored first in the fourth (6:38), but Stanford responded with four consecutive goals from Berggren (6:07), Dani Jackovich (5:03), Neushul (4:29) and Sohi (penalty – 1:43). Nikole Ferrari was successful in a 6-on-4 late for the Aztecs, her team’s only conversion of eight power play opportunities.

Cassidy Papa capped off the balanced win with one second left, redirecting a pass from Dudley into the back of the cage for her third goal of the season.

Stanford will play at home once more in 2016 when it hosts undefeated and No. 1 USC (19-0, 4-0 MPSF) on Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
