BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 29 Stanford dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 16 California on Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Cardinal (13-9, 4-3 Pac-12) had its three-match winning streak snapped and suffered its second loss of the season to the Golden Bears (15-5, 5-2 Pac-12), with Cal also prevailing 4-3 in nonconference action back on Feb. 20.
California grabbed the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, thanks to victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.
Filip Bergevi extended the advantage to 2-0 following a 6-0, 7-6 (3) win over Nolan Paige on court four.
Stanford’s lone point came from Brandon Sutter, who defeated Mads Engsted 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 position.
Florian Lakat added a 7-6 (2), 6-3 triumph against Tom Fawcett at the top spot of the lineup before Andre Goransson provided the clincher with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over David Wilczynski on court two.
Stanford returns to action next week at the Pac-12 Championships. The field will be announced on Sunday.
