STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford was well represented with 14 athletic programs earning perfect 1,000 multi-year scores in today’s annual edition of Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics issued by the NCAA.
Fourteen Cardinal programs (10 women’s, 4 men’s) checked in with scores of 1,000 for the multi-year rate, which measures data collected over a span of four academic years, beginning with 2011-12.
The APR uses a series of formulas related to student-athlete retention and eligibility to measure the academic performances of all participants who receive grants-in-aid on every team at every NCAA Division I college and university. Stanford’s 14 selections rank second nationally among NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) behind only Notre Dame (16).
Men’s basketball, men’s tennis, men’s water polo and wrestling accounted for the male sports. Also recognized were women’s basketball, women’s fencing, field hockey, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s soccer, women’s softball, women’s tennis, women’s volleyball and women’s water polo.
Meanwhile, 17 Cardinal teams (11 women’s, 6 men’s) registered perfect 1,000 scores when taking into account single-year rates for the 2014-15 campaign. Scores are calculated for each program at each institution. Scholarship student-athletes earn points for remaining academically eligible, staying in school or graduating.
Men’s basketball, men’s gymnastics, men’s tennis, men’s track and field, men’s water polo and wrestling achieved the highest level of excellence. Women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s soccer, softball, women’s tennis, women’s track and field, women’s volleyball and women’s water polo were honored among the female sports.
Today’s release comes on the heels of last week’s announcement that saw 17 Stanford programs earn APR Public Recognition Awards, which are bestowed to teams posting multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Stanford accounted for nearly half of the Pac-12 sports receiving recognition (35).
Among the 17 programs receiving Public Recognition Awards: baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s fencing, field hockey, football, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s track and field, softball, women’s volleyball, men’s water polo, women’s water polo and wrestling.
Among those represented as the lone program within its conference: women’s soccer (Pac-12), softball (Pac-12), men’s track and field (Pac-12) and wrestling (Pac-12).
The APR is an annual scorecard showcasing academic achievement each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 977 to a perfect 1,000.
Stanford, which last year captured its 21st consecutive Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup as the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic department, has already produced two national champions this year. The men’s soccer program claimed the Cardinal’s 108th NCAA title back in December, while synchronized swimming claimed Stanford’s 130th overall championship last month.
