REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – No. 15 Stanford faced off against No. 2 California in the 83rd annual Big Row Saturday morning with the Golden Bears taking three races.
“The Big Row is always an exciting regatta,” Stanford head men’s rowing coach Craig Amerkhanian said. “We are looking for segments of success and for our program to build on what we accomplished the previous time out. We faced a nationally ranked and a really good California team. The varsity eight had a pretty good first 1,000 meters, but we just couldn’t sustain it. It’s a learning experience. We are a young team with a couple freshmen in the varsity eight. This team is committed to one another and will keep taking a step forward.”
The Cardinal faced the Bears in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and third varsity eight. Cal (5:36.63) claimed the Schwabacher Cup with a win over Stanford (5:49.78) in the varsity eight.
The Bears opened the regatta with a win in the second varsity eight. Stanford completed the course in 6:06.02, with Cal finishing in a time of 5:47.16.
Stanford’s third varsity eight raced down the course at Redwood Shores in a time of 6:24.50, with the Golden Bears claiming the race in a time of 5:53.75.
Stanford and California will meet again in two weeks as the Cardinal and Golden Bears will compete in the Pac-12 Championships at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California on Sunday, May 15.
Stanford will travel to Seattle next Saturday (May 7) to compete in the Windermere Cup, joining the host Huskies and the Russian Men's National Team during the prestigious event on Montlake Cut.
