Big Meet CXXII

BERKELEY, Calif. – On April 22, 1893, Stanford and California first met in a track and field meet, held at the Olympic Club Grounds in San Francisco.

Cal dominated what was titled, the “First Intercollegiate Field Day” by a 91-35 score, though Stanford won three events, highlighted by a sweep of the two-mile bicycle race, and placing first and third in the one-mile walk.

Stanford did not win its first “Big Meet” until 1903, snapping a winless streak that extended 10 years. However, since the end of a 25-year Cal winning streak (1972-96), the men’s series has been nearly even, with Stanford holding a 10-9 lead.

At Saturday’s 122nd renewal of the Big Meet at Berkeley's Edwards Stadium, Stanford seeks to end a three-year men’s losing streak. Meanwhile, the Cardinal women look to create a streak of their own, after routing the Bears 111-40 for Stanford’s fourth victory in five years.

Women’s javelin streak: Stanford’s longest winning streak in any event is believed to be in the women’s javelin, which Cal hasn’t won since 2002. Stanford’s streak began with Erin Merriman, who won twice, in 2003 and 2004. Danielle Maier won four times (2005-08) and Brianna Bain was a three-time winner (2012-14) and holds the school and meet record of 183-10. Stanford freshman Mackenzie Little came within six inches of that throw on Saturday in her collegiate debut, at the Stanford Invitational. Last year, Victoria Smith took first with a throw of 155-5.
