WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – In a rain shortened first day at the 2016 Knecht Cup at Mercer Lake, Stanford captured a pair of heat wins to advance on Saturday.
The Cardinal lightweight varsity eight cruised to victory with an open water win in its heat to advance to Sunday’s Grand Final. Stanford raced down the course in 7:48.10, 35 seconds ahead of second-place Harvard Radcliffe (8:23.34). Stanford will face Princeton, MIT, Harvard Radcliffe, Villanova and Boston in Sunday’s Grand Final set to begin at 8:15 a.m. PT.
Stanford’s lightweight varsity eight competed in the novice eight race, winning its heat by open water. The Cardinal finished the race in 7:44.03, ahead of second-place Alabama (7:51.13) and third-place North Carolina (7:55.67). It will face Duquesne, Wisconsin (lightweight), Delaware, North Carolina and Old Dominion in a semifinal heat scheduled for 5:48 a.m. PT. Should it reach the Grand Final or the Petite Final, the Cardinal will race again around 10:42 a.m. PT.
Stanford also competed in the varsity four on Saturday, fielding a lightweight crew in the event. The Cardinal finished its heat in 8:23.37 to place third, behind North Carolina (8:03.74) and Temple (8:14.17). Stanford did not advance to the semifinals in the event.
The lightweight varsity eight race was not completed on Saturday due to rain and Stanford’s heat is now scheduled for 7:26 a.m. PT. The Cardinal has two entries in the event.
