LAS VEGAS – Sophomore Melissa Lord knocked off No. 4-ranked Ena Shibahara of UCLA 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday afternoon to claim her first career singles title at the Freeman Memorial Championships.
Lord, who also defeated No. 8-ranked Luisa Stefani of Pepperdine in the round of 16, won five matches over a three-day stretch to capture the hardware.
Improving to 9-1 overall this season, Lord has picked up where she left off following an impressive freshman campaign. Playing most of her matches at the No. 6 spot last year as a rookie, Lord was Stanford's hottest player down the stretch in 2016, winning 10 of her final 11 matches while compiling a 6-0 mark during the Cardinal's NCAA championship run.
Stanford opens dual match play on Jan. 27 against Saint Mary's at 1:30 p.m.
