BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cardinal closed out its 2017 opener Sunday afternoon with a perfect sweep of team and individual event titles as it topped the No. 8 California Golden Bears 418.100 to 403.150. Akash Modi took the All-Around title as well as the pommel horse and parallel bar titles.
The Cardinal opened up on pommel horse, which saw Stanford struggle a bit out of the gate, before Akash Modi stepped in to win the title with a phenomenal 15.050. Grant Breckenridge and Joey Ringer followed in his wake to take 13.150 scores as Stanford edged Cal 66.900 to 64.200 to take the event.
In the second rotation, the Cardinal stormed out to win floor, which was led by Jordan DeClerk and Akash Modi who took first and second with 14.760 and 14.550 scores respectively. The Bears fired back taking third and fourth, but Jacob Barrus put down a 14.200 to help Stanford take the event 70.250 to 70.150.
Up next on vault, sophomore Barrett Weiss scored a phenomenal 14.700 in his debut to win the event and was followed up by Grant Breckenridge at 14.600 and Akash Modi at 14.550. The Cardinal claimed its third event win with a 72.100 score to Cal's 70.200 while leading 209.250 to 199.750 at the halfway mark.
The Cardinal was just heating up though as it headed to still rings next to see Josiah Eng absolutely demolish the event with a 14.400. Jordan DeClerk continued his solid showing on the day with a 13.700 to take second while Grant Breckenridge added a third place finish with a 13.500. Stanford remained undefeated on the day in events, taking rings 68.350 to 65.400 for the Bears.
Stanford kept rolling in high bar for the fifth rotation as it remained undefeated with Robert Neff taking the event title with a 14.600 that was followed up by Akash Modi, Grant Breckenridge and Taylor Seaton as the Cardinal took the first four finishes to roll to a 70.550 team win.
Entering the final rotation, Akash Modi was nearly flawless on parallel bars, adding his second event win of the day with a 15.450. The next closest in the event was teammate Jacob Barrus with a 14.150. Freshman David Jessen added a top-five event finish in his debut with a 14.000 as Stanford finished the clean sweep of the day with a final team score of 418.100 to Cal's 403.150.
The Cardinal returns home for its annual Stanford Open next weekend. The all-day event will culminate with Stanford facing California and Washington at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.
