SEATTLE – The Stanford track and field team claimed six victories at the season-opening UW Indoor Preview on Saturday, but runner-up finishes by Olivia Baker and Harrison Williams may have been the most impressive.

Baker set a school record in the seldom-run 600 meters, clocking 1:28.22 to finish behind Oregon's Raevyn Rogers in a repeat of last year's NCAA outdoor 800 final. Rogers ran 1:26.97 while Baker bettered her 2016 Stanford mark of 1:29.08.

Williams, a two-time NCAA top-five placer in the decathlon, pole vaulted 17-8 ½ -- a personal best by five inches – to finish second on misses. Williams moved up to No. 3 on Stanford's all-time indoor performers' list. Williams, a junior, tied Cole Walsh of Oregon in height, but made 17-8 ½ on his third try and took 14 jumps overall. Walsh, in contrast, took only seven jumps and made 17-8 ½ on his first try.

Williams also was fifth in the long jump (22-3) and sixth in the 60 high hurdles (8.36).

Stanford concluded the meet with a strong victory in the men's 4x400 relay. Freshman Julian Body, making his collegiate debut, led off and Frank Kurtz took the Cardinal into second. Isaac Westlund, a sophomore from the Seattle area, fought to the lead and the final handoff was even with Washington. Jackson Shumway, Stanford's fifth-year anchor, made a final pass along the final turn and extended his lead to the finish line. Stanford won in 3:15.26.

Stanford women's winners were Gaby Gayles in the 400 (55.96), Rachel Reichenbach in the high jump (5-7), and Valarie Allman in the 20-pound weight throw (59-8 ½).

Stanford men's winners were Jackson Shumway won the 400 (47.93) and Jaak Uudmae in the triple jump (50-3 ¼).

In the men's 35-pound weight throw, Tristen Newman's 60-0 ½ was a three-foot personal best and moved him into the Stanford all-time top-10  list at No. 9.

In the men's 1,000, freshman Isaac Cortes made his collegiate debut and placed second only to two-time NCAA indoor champion Eric Jenkins (2:23.95) of the Nike Oregon Project. Cortes ran 2:24.05.

Other bigtime performances came from Rebecca Mehra, who was second in the women's 1,000 in 2:43.69 and Vanessa Fraser, who was fourth in the women's mile in a personal best 4:42.47.
