SONOMA, Calif. – The Stanford men's rowing team participated in the sixth annual John's Army Stomach Cancer Awareness Run this past weekend at Sonoma Raceway.
"Our team was honored to be part of Sonoma Raceway's John's Army tribute walk/cancer awareness day," said 17th-year head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "This spectacular venue provided inspiration and a strong community bond as people from all over the Bay walked/ran on this race course of champions for stomach cancer awareness."
The event was established to honor the raceway's longtime spokesman John Cardinale, who passed away in 2013 after a two-year battle with the disease, becoming one of nearly 723,000 people who will die from stomach cancer in the world each year.
Each year, Sonoma Raceway opens its 12-turn course to walkers and runners alike to host the West Coast's only major fundraising event for gastric cancer, which is the third leading cause for cancer deaths worldwide.
No Stomach For Cancer is a non-profit group that works to increase awareness and education about stomach cancer, provide a support network for affected families and support research efforts for screening, early detection, treatment and prevention of the disease.
The Cardinal returns to action April 1-2 when it travels to San Diego to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic. Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
