Setback in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite a pin by Keaton Subjeck and wins from Joey McKenna, Paul Fox and Peter Galli, the 17th-ranked Stanford wrestling team was upset, 18-15, by Oregon State on Monday in Gill Coliseum.

The Beavers (2-5, 1-0 Pac-12) won six of the 10 bouts, including upsets over ninth-ranked Nathan Butler at heavyweight and 13th-ranked Connor Schram at 133 pounds. The Cardinal (8-3, 4-1 Pac-12) was competing without 125-pound starter Gabriel Townsell, who is ranked 19th nationally.

With he team score tied at 15-15, it all came down to the heaveyweight match between Butler and Cody Crawford. There was a lot of action, but no score in the opening period. Each wrestler tallied an escape to send it into overtime. Butler went in on a single-leg shot late, but was unable to convert. Crawford capitalized with just 16 seconds left in the sudden victory period, picking up the 3-1 decision and ultimately giving his team the dual victory.

Third-ranked McKenna scored the first points of the dual for the Cardinal with a dominating 5-1 decision over Jack Hathaway at 141 pounds. The sophomore recorded a takedown in the first 10 seconds of the bout and rode Hathaway for the remainder of the period. McKenna went down to start the second and quickly scored a reversal for a 4-0 lead before giving up an escape. He finished the match with 5:18 of riding time, but was unable to score any back points. He is now 24-1 overall and 9-0 in duals this season. For his career, McKenna is 51-4.

Fox, a redshirt sophomore, pulled the Cardinal to within three at 9-6 with a 7-4 decision over Abraham Rodriguez at 157 pounds. Fox scored a first period takedown and a reversal in the second to take a lead into the final frame. He secured another takedown in the third and added an escape, holding off Rodriguez down the stretch. A native of Gilroy, California, Fox is tied for second on the team with 21 wins overall and moves to 6-5 in duals. 

Subjeck gave Stanford the lead with a first period fall over Weston Dobler at 165 pounds. The redshirt junior tallied the pin in 2:40 for his fifth fall of the year. Ranked 18th in the nation, Subjeck is now 17-6 overall and 8-2 in duals.

Galli notched the final Cardinal points of the night with a 6-2 decision over Bob Coleman at 174 pounds. Ranked 19th nationally, Galli led 2-1 going into the final period. The Baltimore, Maryland native added an escape to start the third and was able to register another takedown to pick up the victory. He is tied with Fox for second on the squad with 20 wins, while he has gone 8-1 in duals for Stanford.

Oregon State took an early 6-0 lead in the dual with wins in the first two bouts. Kegan Calkins of Oregon State earned a 5-2 decision over Brian Rossi at 125 pounds before Joey Palmer recorded a 2-1 upset over No. 13 Connor Schram at 133 for the Beavers. Rossi flew to Oregon late Sunday night to join the team and wrestle for the injured Townsell. Palmer and Schram were tied 1-1 in the third period when Schram was hit for stalling for the second time in the match, ultimately giving up the winning point.

The Beavers took a 9-3 lead in the dual after 18th-ranked Joey Delgado shut out Tommy Pawelski, 5-0, at 149 pounds. Seth McLeod also picked up a win for the Beavers, 9-2, over Zach Nevills at 184 pounds, while Corey Griego earned a 9-5 decision over redshirt senior Josh Marchok at 197 pounds.

Stanford will have 10 days off before returning to the mat on Friday, Feb. 10 at Utah Valley. The Cardinal will return home for Senior Day on Sunday, Feb. 12 against San Francisco State to close out the dual season.
