Cardinal Rolls Santa Clara

Scoresheet Opens in a new window

BERKELEY, Calif. – Freshman Makenzie Fischer scored a season-high five times, three other Cardinal added hat tricks and No. 1 Stanford rolled to a 19-1 win over Santa Clara at the Cal Speedo Cup on Saturday.

The Cardinal (8-0) fired home the game's first 11 unanswered to build an insurmountable lead. Katie Dudley was responsible for Stanford's first two tallies, Maggie Steffens took care of the next pair and Kat Klass ripped in another to put the Cardinal up 5-0 after one.

Fischer rattled the cage for the first time 75 seconds into the second quarter, scored twice more later in the period and closed out her morning with Stanford's final two goals late in the final frame. With 17 goals now to her name in her debut campaign, Fischer is tied with Jamie Neushul and Steffens for the team lead.

Dudley scored three times for her first hat trick of the season while Steffens scored three for the third time in 2017. Madison Berggren's hat trick, with all three goals coming in the third quarter, was her second of the season.

Stanford's most fruitful period was the third when it scored seven times. Along with Berggren's three, Dudley and Steffens completed their hat tricks while Kat Klass and Shannon Cleary found the back of the cage as well.

Julia Hermann played the first half in the cage and Gabby Stone handled the second. Each made five saves.

Stanford returns to action at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine next weekend as the tournament's top seed. The Cardinal, which will be looking for its first title at the event since 2011, opens with a game against CSUN on Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.
