STANFORD, Calif. – The second-ranked Cardinal returns to action this week after a bye week as it sets to travel to Colorado to face No. 8 Air Force on Saturday at noon PT in MPSF gymnastics action.
The Cardinal (3-0, 2-0 MPSF) in its first two meets has been dominant, topping No. 9 California twice and No. 17 Washington. In impressive fashion, Stanford has swept every event title in both team and individual in its first two meets of the year.
Stanford opened up the season at Cal with a 418.100 win which it improved upon in the next week while hosting the Stanford Open for a 423.600 win – more than a 20 point win over its competitors; No. 9 Cal and No. 17 Washington.
In the first meet of the year, Akash Modi led the way for the Cardinal, collecting the all-around, pommel horse and parallel bar titles.
It also proved to be a huge day for several other Cardinal, with collegiate debuts for David Jessen, Connor Lewis, Bailey Perez and Joey Ringer for freshmen. Also making a debut was Barrett Weiss who floored a phenomenal 14.700 on vault to take the event title.
Robert Neff added a career day with an event title in high bar for a 14.600.
At the Stanford Open, Modi was again the leader with wins in the all-around, floor, pommel horse and parallel bars while also taking second in high bar, rings and vault.
Teammates Josiah Eng (rings), Taylor Seaton (vault) and David Jessen (high bar) also claimed event titles in the meet as well as Modi, Robert Neff and Grant Breckenridge going 1-3 on the podium in the all-around.
Up in the Air
After the first three weeks of the season, Air Force is ranked eighth in the NCAA with a 403.950 average. As a team, the Falcons are ranked among the country's top 10 on the pommel horse (fourth, 67.883), high bar (seventh, 66.983), still rings (eighth, 67.550) and parallel bars (eighth, 57.183). Individually, Tim Wang is ranked third on the pommel horse (14.517), sixth in the all-around (83.225) and seventh on the vault (14.800). Jonathon Fornoff and Fletcher Braunton are also mentioned among the nation's top 10, as Fornoff is ranked eighth on the parallel bars (14.333) and Braunton is listed ninth on the pommel horse (13.967).
