Back-To-Back

NEW ORLEANS – The top-ranked Stanford women's golf team won for the second consecutive week, pulling away for an 11-stroke victory on Monday in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at breezy English Turn Golf & Country Club.

After posting a wire-to-wire victory on its home course at the Peg Barnard Invitational, the Cardinal proved it can come from behind, too.

Stanford put up rounds of 293-278-292 to finish at 1-under 863. Florida was second at 10-over 874.

The Cardinal trailed frontrunner Miami by six strokes and was tied for seventh after Sunday's opening round in the 17-team tournament. Due to the threat of inclement weather on Tuesday, 36 holes were played Monday and Stanford was equal to the task.

In the morning, the squad combined for an event-best 10-under score of 278, as senior Casey Danielson and freshmen Andrea Lee and Albane Valenzuela broke 70. Danielson fired a career-best 5-under 67, while Lee shot 68 and Valenzuela a season-low 69.

The 10-under total was one shy of the 18-hole program record of 11-under established in 2015 at the Branch Law invitational.

"One of the best rounds of team golf I have seen in my career," said Anne Walker, the Milias Director of Women's Golf. "The conditions were tough with gusting winds that were changing direction. The team showed up ready to compete."

The sizzling performance was a 15-shot improvement from Sunday and vaulted Stanford to a seven-stroke lead over Miami.

In the afternoon round, Lee led the way with another 68. She finished with five birdies, including 16, 17 and 18. Lee birdied the par-4 seventh hole, her last of the tournament, to finish solo second at 4-under 212.

Danielson closed with a 74 to wind up at 3-under 213 and tied for third. Valenzuela also posted 74 and tied for 10th after placing eighth at the Barnard Invitational.

Junior Shannon Aubert (71-74-76) tied for 24th at 5-over 221, while freshman Ziyi Wang (76-79-80) tied for 74th at 19-over 235.

Lee, who has risen to No. 1 in the country in the Golfweek rankings, now has three wins and two seconds in six college starts. Eight of her 14 rounds have been in the 60s.

Danielson has recorded five consecutive top 10s and has finished fourth or better in her last three tournaments.

"Andrea and Casey once again showed they that are worthy to be in the Player of the Year conversation," Walker said.

Stanford returns to competition Feb. 27-28 at the Bruin Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, California.
