Cardinal Slowed by CSUN

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 7 Stanford men's volleyball team had its three-match winning streak halted, dropping a 31-29, 25-16, 25-18 decision at No. 14 CSUN on Friday in the Matadome.
 
Stanford (6-3, 3-1 MPSF) did not have an answer for CSUN opposite Arvis Greene, who recorded a match-high 26 kills on 39 swings with just two errors to hit .615. As a team, the Matadors (9-3, 2-3 MPSF) hit .417, while the Cardinal was held to a season-low .115 clip.
 
Stanford had its chances in the first set, but was unable to capitalize down the stretch. There were 14 tie scores and eight lead changes in the opening set, where the Cardinal tallied 17 kills on a .289 hitting percentage.
 
It was downhill after the first as Stanford recorded just 17 kills in the second and third sets combined. CSUN, which entered the match as the national leader in hitting percentage (.392), hit .621 in the second set (19-1-29) and led throughout the duration of the third.
 
Stanford was led by Jordan Ewert's 10 kills and six digs. Redshirt senior Gabriel Vega added eight kills, while sophomore Matt Klassen tallied seven. Redshirt junior Kevin Rakestraw was limited to five kills on a .111 attack percentage.
 
Freshman setter Paul Bischoff recorded 26 assists for the Cardinal, while junior libero Evan Enriques collected a team-best 10 digs.
 
Stanford is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 at third-ranked Long Beach State. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Pyramid.
