STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford senior forward Erica McCall was named to the Late Season Top 20 list for the 2017 John R. Wooden Award® presented by Wendy's® the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Wednesday.
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird ('79), Michael Jordan ('84), Tim Duncan ('97), Candace Parker ('07 and '08), Kevin Durant ('09) and Maya Moore of Connecticut ('09 and '11). Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike won the 2014 Wooden Award.
Earlier Wednesday, McCall was also named one of 30 players still under consideration for the 2017 Naismith Women's College Player of the Year.
McCall paces Stanford in scoring (15.9), rebounding (8.3) and blocks (1.5) and is among the top seven in the Pac-12 in each category. Since the start of her junior year, McCall is averaging 15.3 points on 49.8 percent shooting and 9.0 rebounds, one of just three players in the country with those numbers since the beginning of the 2015-16 season.
Also on the watch lists for the Wade Trophy, Wooden Award and Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, McCall became Stanford's 37th 1,000-point scorer at George Washington on Dec. 21 and is currently 29th in program history with 1,211. Her 173 career blocks are fourth at Stanford and she is also ninth in school history with 833 career rebounds.
McCall's 29 career double-doubles are tied for 16th among active NCAA players and she's had 27 in her last 58 games, 10th in the country over that span. In 12 Pac-12 games McCall is averaging 15.2 points 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, one of 12 players in the nation averaging those numbers in conference.
No. 8 Stanford (20-4, 10-2) hosts Colorado (13-10, 3-9) on Friday at 8 p.m. in a game televised on Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Mountain.
