COLUMBUS, Ohio
– Defending champion Stanford started strong Thursday on the first day of the U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships at Ohio State University.
 
The Cardinal advanced in solo and duet, and will send two trio teams into the finals on Saturday following preliminary round qualifying.
 
 In duet, Sandra Ortellado and Erica Slavin led all schools with a score of 84.5667. In trio, Clare McGovern, Ortellado and Slavin paced the field with a tally of 83.9333, while teammates Rachel Hyon, Isabella Park and Marisa Tashima placed third with a total of 82.2333.
 
McGovern also advanced in solo, finishing second with a score of 82.8000.
 
On Friday, technical and preliminary team qualifying will be held.
