Shooting for Three

INDIANAPOLIS – Alexander Massialas earned the lead in men's foil Thursday after three rounds of the National Collegiate Fencing Championships at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
 
The fifth-year senior and two-time NCAA champion from San Francisco recorded an 11-4 record in 15 bouts to post a +32 indicator. Defending national champion Maximilian Chastenet of Ohio State also won 11 bouts and is second at +24, while Nolen Scruggs of Columbia is third at +16.
 
On Friday, Massialas will compete in the fourth and fifth rounds, followed by the semifinals and finals. The latter two will broadcast on ESPN3 or the WatchESPN.app.
 
Five other Cardinal men competed. Darren Mei won one match and is 24th in foil; Samuel Kwong (4-11) and Jeffrey Dalli (3-12) are 21st and 23rd, respectively, in sabre; while Sean Strong (7-8) and Tristan Krueger (6-9) are 15th and 18th, respectively, in epee.
 
In the team standings, host Notre Dame leads with 57 points, followed by Ohio State (56) and Columbia (51). Stanford is ninth with 32 points.
