STANFORD, Calif. – The Cardinal returns to The Farm this week, where it will host conference opponents Fresno State and Oregon. Games are set for 6 p.m. PT on Tuesday and Friday in Stanford Stadium. In addition, Stanford will also be holding a One Love week as part of its efforts in joining the One Love Foundation in working to end relationship violence.
One Love:
Stanford has a passion on the field as well as off of it. For the past few years the Cardinal, led by senior captain Charlotte Ward, has been involved with the One Love Foundation - an organization founded to help work towards ending relationship violence. Included in that work are social media campaigns, PSAs, and interviews to spread the One Love message - as well as hosting several Escalation Workshops - which are 90 minute workshops that educate the Stanford community about relationship violence and empowers them to work for change.
Last year, Ward and the Cardinal's efforts were honored with the Thomas W. Ford Award at the annual Stanford Athletics Board Awards ceremony - an award given to the team for its work in changing its community and the world for the better.
Last Time Out:
Stanford resumed MPSF action against Colorado last week, where it fell 13-8 to the Buffs for the first loss to CU in program history. Allie DaCar amassed 14 saves - which ties her career best that she posted twice in 2016 and once in 2015.
Fresno State:
The Bulldogs enter into Tuesday's contest with an 8-5 record and 1-4 conference record with their eye on the first winning season in program history. Fresno State is coming off a split week that opened with a 17-12 win over SDSU before a 16-7 loss to UC Davis.
Tuesday's game marks the 10th time the Cardinal has taken on the Bulldogs, with Stanford holding a perfect 9-0 record. Against FS last year, Stanford won 18-6 in Fresno, Calif.
Oregon:
The Ducks will come to The Farm on Friday night with a 7-6 overall record and 3-2 conference record. Oregon took on No. 9 USC last weekend in a 17-7 loss.
All-time against Oregon, the Cardinal holds a 12-3 record. Last season Stanford traveled to Eugene to face the Ducks, emerging with a 14-2 win. Amy Bokker has also proven successful against the Ducks with a 7-2 record against Oregon. The Ducks are also the first team Bokker faced as head coach at Stanford in 2009 - resulting in a 17-5 win for the Cardinal.
Potent Offense:
The Cardinal returned five of its strongest offensive threats last year in Kelsey Murray, Anna Salemo, Kelly Myers, Elizabeth Cusick and Dillon Schoen.
This year, Stanford is ranked 17th in the NCAA in scoring offense with a 14.27 average. Leading the way is All-American Kelsey Murray with 27.
Offense May Win Games, but Defense...
The Cardinal has taken pride in its defensive prowess in its program history, but this year it has a daunting task in replacing two All-Americans on defense in Adrienne Anderson and Meg Lentz. The duo combined last year with senior Alexa Mullins sending three new faces into defense in 2017. Freshmen Kyra Pelton and Mikaela Watson have filled that hole with junior Cameron Park.
Currently on the year the Cardinal is 46th in the NCAA in scoring defense, though where Stanford really shines is in caused turnovers per game, where its ranked second in the MPSF and 10th in the NCAA with an 11.73 average.
Three-Year Streak:
Senior All-American Kelsey Murray has amassed an incredible career in her four years on The Farm. Overall, she's currently tied for ninth all-time in career goals for Stanford with 112. In addition to that, Murray has tallied a point for the Cardinal in every game she's played in since March 7, 2014 against Towson. That's 48 straight games of production for the senior.
Treat Your Elders With Respect:
The Cardinal is well aware of the adage after the return of Anna Salemo - the oldest MPSF Rookie of the Year. Salemo returned to Stanford lacrosse after a four-year break, including coaching the Mountain View High School girl's varsity lacrosse team. In her first season back she finished ranked 3rd in game-winning goals, 7th in the MPSF in goals, 9th in points and 10th in goals per game on the team. Bottom line - the southpaw isn't one you should ever take your eye off of.
