Crew Classic Finale

SAN DIEGO – Stanford men's rowing placed two of its three entries in the top three during Sunday's Grand Finals of the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.

"Our freshman eight was outstanding today," Stanford men's rowing head coach Craig Amerkhanian said. "Our varsity eight knew we were facing tremendous crews in Cal and Yale and our third-place finish is a good starting point toward our season goals. Our second varsity eight was a bit disjointed today and will improve. We are exciting the 2017 season has officially begun."

The Cardinal varsity eight placed third in Sunday's Grand Final of the Copley Cup. Stanford raced down the course in 5:50.02 to finish behind first-place California (5:35.50) and second-place Yale (5:39.01).

The novice eight placed second in the Derek Guelker Cup Grand Final with an open-water advantage over third place Orange Coast. The Cardinal recorded a time of 6:12.71, ahead of Orange Coast's 6:19.44. California claimed the Grand Final with a time of 5:54.35.

Stanford's second varsity eight finished fifth in the Grand Final of the Sharp Cabrillo Cup with a time of 6:13.58. California won the Grand Final with a time of 5:42.49, while Yale (5:47.18) placed second, Michigan RA (6:05.92) was third and British Columbia (6:06.93) finished fourth.

Stanford will return to action Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, when the Cardinal hosts the Stanford Invitational at Redwood Shores. It will be Stanford's first home regatta of the 2017 season.
