TUCSON, Ariz. – Stanford could not slow down No. 4 Arizona's high-powered offense and dropped a 20-1 decision Friday evening at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Wildcats (38-1, 10-0 Pac-12) hit seven home runs, including five in the first inning, to take an early and commanding 13-0 lead it would never relinquish.
Whitney Burks hit a pinch-hit home run in the top of the fifth inning for the Cardinal's (16-17, 0-7 Pac-12) lone run of the game. It was a towering shot to center field that landed well beyond the outfield wall.
Kylie Sorenson went 2-for-3 with two singles. She nearly had her second home run of the season in the third inning but it was called foul down the left field line.
Stanford's defense played well, highlighted by quality plays by middle-infielders Lauren Wegner and Sorenson, and Molly Fowkes in left field.
Wegner and Sorenson handled a number of tricky hops and sharp ground balls throughout the game to secure outs.
Fowkes got the Cardinal out of a rough first inning with a diving head-first catch in foul territory for the third out.
