ACE PARTICIPANT PROFILES
STANFORD, Calif. – In its second year of international service, the Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement (ACE) Program provides one-time funding for accepted Stanford and Duke student-athletes to participate in three-week, immersive summer service experiences with an international community partner.
Scheduled to begin on June 22 in Vietnam, ACE is a joint collaboration between the Stanford and Duke athletic departments, as well as Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford and DukeEngage at Duke. The program is made possible by the generous supports of David Rubenstein and Peter and Helen Bing.
"I knew I wanted to participate in a program that would allow me to travel abroad and positively impact people's lives," said Rodney Herenton, who is a member of the Stanford men's basketball team. "The challenge was finding the time to do it. The moment I heard about ACE, I applied right away. ACE caters specifically to student-athletes, so it is the perfect way to spend three weeks of my summer."
Student-athletes from both institutions will have the chance to volunteer together in one of four international group programs (Vietnam, South Africa, China and India) with diverse service themes including health outreach, education, environmental sustainability and conservation, social enterprise, coaching and more.
"ACE allows me to give back to a community while enabling me to see a part of the world I have never seen before," said Allie DaCar, who competes for Stanford's lacrosse team. "I am excited to use me experience as a student-athlete to bring change to a community and bring individuals together through sports, recreation and learning."
Stanford will be represented by 20 student-athletes across 15 sport programs, with beach volleyball and softball each sending three student-athletes. For more information visit, www.ace.stanford.edu.
