ATHENS, Ga. - Tom Fawcett closed out his impressive run in the NCAA singles championship on Sunday after falling 6-3, 6-2 to Virginia's Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in the semifinal round.
Fawcett, the 8th-seed entering into the tournament, cruised through the first four rounds looking to become Stanford's 15th NCAA singles champion and first since Bradley Klahn in 2010.
The Cardinal was unable to top Kwiatkowski, a three-time NCAA team champion with the Cavaliers. Kwiatkowski picked up a break in both sets to take a 3-1 lead that Fawcett was unable to recover from with Kwiatkowski closing the match out with an ace for match point.
The loss closes out the 2017 season for the Cardinal, which advanced as a team to the round of 16 for the second consecutive year.
