Stanford (40-14, 21-9 Pac-12) will enter the postseason with wins in 21 of its last 23 games, including four Pac-12 sweeps and six consecutive series wins. Stanford's 40 regular season wins are the most since 2004, and the most overall wins since the 2012 team racked up 41. This is the 21st 40-win season in the 41-year tenure of head coach Mark Marquess, who is retiring at season's end.
The Cardinal finished as the runner-up in the Pac-12 to No. 1 Oregon State. Stanford won 21 conference games for the first time since winning the Pac-8 Southern Division with a 22-8 mark in 1998.
Stanford last played in the postseason in 2014. Then-freshman Tommy Edman hit a walk off home run to win the Bloomington Regional over host Indiana. The Cardinal eventually fell at Vanderbilt in Game 3 of the Super Regional.
Stanford, which last hosted a Regional in 2012 and last reached the College World Series in 2008, has won three straight Regionals (2011, 2012, 2014).
This will be the 16th time Sunken Diamond has served as host to a Regional (Stanford has advanced 12 of the previous 15 times).
